The Kenton County Conservation District (KCCD) is leading efforts to restore urban forests and enhance green spaces in the communities of Erlanger and Elsmere. This Initiative began when KCCD received a generous donation of land and funding from the Martin family in Erlanger, with the condition that the property be dedicated to conservation and environmental education. KCCD embraced this opportunity and began transforming the property into what is now known as “Martin Woods”. While the property represented valuable green space, it was overgrown with invasive plants, like bush honeysuckle, and the mature trees required care. With the support of volunteers, KCCD contracted with a local tree service to remove invasive species and clear dangerous, dead, and dying trees. Additionally, volunteers and donations helped KCCD plant several new native trees and shrubs, including oaks, poplars, redbuds, spicebush and wahoo, to revitalize the landscape. Because the property is located adjacent to Miles Elementary School, KCCD established a walking trail, along with a welcome kiosk, education stations, and activity guides to provide teachers with opportunities to take students outdoors and enhance science lessons through hands-on experiences.
A testament to KCCD’s mission to protect and manage Kenton County’s natural resources through education, service, and sustainable practices. By restoring urban forests, KCCD continues to enhance the environment and improve the quality of life for local communities.
